A Swiss engineering company has selected a Phoenix suburb as the site of its first U.S. factory.

Meyer Burger will produce solar panels for residential and commercial rooftops, along with utility-scale projects, at a facility in Goodyear, Arizona. The company first announced plans to set up manufacturing operations in the U.S. — its first outside Europe — in September 2021.

Meyer Burger officials said the Arizona site would allow the company to produce solar panels closer to suppliers and customers alike. The company also said Arizona offered a diversified, talented workforce and strong partnerships with local governments and economic development groups.

“Solar energy will be critical to achieving U.S. and global clean energy goals, and our proprietary heterojunction cell technology and patented SmartWire module technology enable us to produce products of the highest quality and performance in order to offer our customers economically competitive solar components,” Meyer Burger CEO Gunter Erfurt said in the announcement.

The company expects the Goodyear factory to begin operations by the end of the year. It will initially house 250 workers and feature the ability to produce 400 megawatts’ worth of panels per year. At full capacity, the site will employ 500 people and have the capacity for 1.5 gigawatts per year.

“This region is poised to be a global leader in this critical sector, and we are excited to welcome a sustainability innovator to the market,” added Greater Phoenix Economic Council President and CEO Chris Camacho.
